The article reflects on the semantic range of the term palimpsest with particular attention to the aspect of palimpsest character of places. The author analyses old and recent ways of using these figures in scientific reflection and literary work (e.g. in ancient rhetoric and contemporary urban studies, in the strand of small homelands and in post‑memorial narratives about the Holocaust). This review becomes a fundament to formulating remarks about the palimpsest as an instrument for describing textual relations, but also as a metaphor for contemporary cultural awareness.
